Did You Know... |
07-06-06 Now that summer is in full swing and the warm temperatures are here we all need to be cognizant of some safety issues. Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle. It does not take very long for temperatures to reach dangerous levels on even a warm day let alone a hot day. I have been told by local merchants that this happens more often then you think. Also remember to practice safe swimming habits and watch out for fellow swimmers. There have been a large number of injuries and drowning here in Oregon, most all of which could have been prevented. Have fun, watch out for each other, and be careful. One of the more prevalent crimes we are experiencing in Vernonia is theft, particularly theft of recyclable metal. The VPD and other local agencies have taken numerous theft reports regarding wire, metal, and other items that can be easily recycled for cash. DADS' Recycling on Lagoon Dr. has been a target several times. Undoubtedly, much of the stolen metal is being recycled for the purchase of drugs. If you have any information about the thefts or if you have been a victim, call the VPD at 503-429-7335. Also watch for suspicious activity not only around your property but your neighbor's as well. July 1st signaled the beginning of several new laws in Oregon. You can see a complete synopsis of the new laws on the VPD website. The school zone speed law was one of these laws to change yet again. School zones will have a 20mph speed limit when they have flashing yellow lights or on school days between the hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm. This means the "At All Times" will not be valid any more. I am working on getting ODOT to change our school zone signs but have been unsuccessful thus far. Please still be vigilant and careful driving through around the schools as many children still use the playground equipment and basketball courts. Watch The Independent in future articles for more information on "Vernonia Night Out" on August 22, 2006. This will be a similar event to the National Night Out we had last year but not so close to Jamboree. |
