Did You Know...

The Vernonia Police Department would like to thank everyone who helped make "Vernonia Night
Out" another success. Once again we had a tremendous turn-out with around 500 people attending
the event. The only complaint I have received was regarding mother nature's decision to have the
breeze blow all of the grill smoke into the picnic area. Even though I smelled like smoke for a couple
of days it was a great time. Thank you to all of the volunteers, businesses, emergency services, and
personal donors who once again showed what a great community we have and how generous
everyone is.

As many of of with children already knew and those without children found out, school is back in
session. Tuesday was the first day of school and the streets were packed with students, parents, and
vehicles. Remember that between 7am and 5pm the speed limit through school zones is 20mph.
Also be aware that traffic will be more congested especially near the Washington Grade School
crosswalks. Use caution when coming down OA Hill as cars often back up to California Ave. Also
remember that the morning fog is also becoming more consistent and visibilities will be limited.

The Vernonia Police Department suggests that everyone remember the ABC's regarding 20mph
School Zones: A-Anytime yellow lights are flashing, B-Between 7am and 5pm and C-Cautious at all
crosswalks near schools. Children are very unpredictable and can dart into traffic or change direction
without warning. By slowing down you can decrease the distance you need to stop and improve your
reaction distance. If you have questions about school zones or any laws please call the VPD.
