Did You Know...

If you haven't been able to attend one of the fall sporting events in the Vernonia school district you
are missing out. With football, volleyball, cross country to choose from, there is always something
going on involving our amazing young people! By the way, have you heard the pep band at the
football games? They sound awesome and really add spirit to game.

One of the recent questions I have been asked is where do the school zones end. In many areas
of the state there is a sign that designates "End of School Zone". According to the Oregon
Department of Transportation the end of a school zone can be designated by a sign or simply by
the posting of a speed limit sign. Here in Vernonia, our school zones end without specific signage.
Please remember to observe the 20mph speed limit on school days between 7am and 5pm and
always use extreme caution when driving around schools, parks, or other areas where children
play.

The Vernonia Drug Free Community Coalition and the City of Vernonia will be hosting some
upcoming training for law enforcement. The training will provide information on outlaw motorcycle
gangs and violent prison gangs. The American Council on Criminal Justice Training will be
bringing the training to the Scout Cabin. We also will be having a presentation for the community
on November 13th on the same topics. Watch the Independent for more details. If you would like to
participate in the Vernonia Drug-Free Community Coalition you can contact the Police
Department or attend the coalition business meeting on the 2nd Monday of the month at the
Vernonia School District Office. We invite everyone to be involved and to help create some
activities for our youth that are drug and alcohol free.

For those who are interested, there will be six weeks of training at the Vernonia Learning Center
entitled "Self Defense Strategies and Tactics for Women". The training will be on Tuesday's
(starting Oct. 17th) except Halloween and will run from 7p to 9p at the Learning Center. The cost is
free and the class is being sponsored by Precision Building Maintenance.
