I hope everyone had a happy and safe New Years Eve and I wish everyone prosperity in the new
year. On December 20th the Vernonia Police Department participated in a town hall meeting at the
Vernonia Middle School. The meeting was arranged by Vernonia School District Superintendent
Ken Cox. Numerous organizations participated in the meeting sharing with the attendees various
programs, services, and volunteer opportunities. The Vernonia community is successful because of
many volunteers that work in and with varied organizations throughout the community.

Many people commented that they did not realize the Vernonia Police Department offered so many
community services and programs. I have been asked to summarize my presentation in my article
which you will see later in this article. The bottom line is that my officers and I are available to give a
presentation or speak to any size group on most any public safety topic. If you are interested in any

The VPD provides the following services/programs/training to the public: Bicycle Safety (events,
presentations, equipment), Parent Aid Drug Testing (non-criminal urine test administered by an
officer for parental use only), Internet Safety information, ID Theft information/presentations, Crime
Prevention, Child Safety information, Drugs/Alcohol, Date Rape, Babysitting Guides, Dealing with
Hostility/Violence in the Workplace, Child Abduction Resistance, Citizen Pepper Spray Certification,
Personal Defense Strategies, Women's Self-Defense Strategies, Narcotics
Awareness/Identification for Citizens, and Prevention of Elder Abuse.
