Did You Know...
07-18-2005

Just a reminder that the 1st Vernonia National Night Out celebration will be August 2nd, 2005 from
6pm to 8pm at Anderson Park. The Vernonia Fire Department, Metro West Ambulance, American
Red Cross, Columbia County Sheriff's Office will all be participating. Life Flght possibly could be
landing if scheduling works out. I have received several prize donations for the free drawings
throughout the evening including a $50 gift card to Target! Come out for free food and chance to
take a stand against crime and violence!

I had an article topic request from a citizen the other day. She brought her dog into the station that
had been attacked and severly injured by a family of raccoons. On July 4th, we had a young girl
bitten by a "friendly" raccoon at Anderson Park and other reports of baby opossums and skunk
families around the area. The police department often gets calls about these types of animals in
around people's property.

Please remember these animals are wild regardless of how friendly or affectionate they may
appear. They are also somewhat protected by Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW)
statutes. According to the ODFW you can't even trap these animals without a permit from their
office. Also remember it is illegal to discharge a firearm within the city limits. Of course, if the
animal is attacking you or your pets you are allowed responsibly protect yourself.

To discourage nomadic animals like raccoons, skunks, and opossums seeking residence around
your home make sure you secure all possible food sources. Make sure garbage is in sealed
containers and don't leave pet food out. If you want more information on dealing with wild animals
or you need assistance you can call ODFW at 503-621-3488. Of course the Vernonia Police
Department will provide any assitance possible if the animals are attacking or other emergency
situations.
