Did You Know...

I want to first apologize for not having blotter or article in the last Independent. I had travelled back
to Nebraka to visit a sick relative but ended up attending a funeral. My family and I say thanks for
the support from everyone during our time loss.

You might have seen a new face in uniform for the department recently. Officer Michael Conner
started on September 1st. Officer Conner comes to us with previous law enforcement experience
with the most recent being a School Resource Officer for Toledo Oregon PD. Officer Kay will be an
excellent addition to the department and will be a great member of our community.

Briefly I would like to remind everyone to protect your personal information. Phishing scams are
very prevalent on the internet and over the telephone. One recent scam involved a Vernonia
resident receiving a telephone call regarding jury duty. Often the caller will claim you failed to report
and a warrant is being issued for your arrest. They ask for your personal information (social
security, DOB, credit cards) for verification purposes.
Other residents have received calls about credit application from car dealers they did not file.

Never give out your social security number, credit card numbers, or other personal confidential
information when you receive a phone call or solicitation. The VPD has seen an increase in identity
theft calls recently so guard your personal information and check your credit history and accounts
often. There are helpful links on the VPD web site to assist you.
