SKID Presentation: May 27, 2005 at Vernonia High School
Youth Programs and Safety
The scene opens on a severe crash:
a front-end collision.
For added realism, wrecked cars are
used as the stage.
To make sure the lesson hits home with
teens, students from their own high
school are actors in the production.
While Fire and EMT personnel are
working with the wounded, Police
field-test the uninjured.
With lights and sirens, Metro-West and
Vernonia Fire District workers
arrive to tend the wounded.
The scene starts small but grows
quickly as more rescuers arrive.
Triage: the unconscious passengers
are taken to the hospital first, then
those who are responsive.
Fire rescuers use tools on the truck
to open the cars and
rescue the injured passengers.
Fire workers rescue passengers.
EMTs assist the injured.
Police look for suspicious substances.
While the injured are rescued, the dead,
beyond help, are taken care of later.
The audience was largely VHS students,
but many Vernonia citizens attended.
Bystanders and uninjured people are
asked for any information about the
injured they can provide.
Those with the worst and life-threatening
injuries are rescued and taken by Life
Flight to the hospital.
The rescue effort for even a 2-car
collision is remarkably large.
Life Flight cannot usually land
so close to the scene; they require
a very large clear area for safety.
Life Flight was on the ground
no more than five minutes
before leaving with their charge.
For maximum effect, a real Life Flight
helicopter and full crew participated.
The "victims" are treated and dressed
with real equipment, including braces,
splints and breathing help.
Once loaded on the ambulance, victims
are taken away with lights and sirens.
The last victim is rescued by Fire and
quickly prepared for transport by EMTs.
Most of the audience watched in silence.
Some were overcome by the experience.
The first police officers arrive and start
evaluating the scene.
Bystanders call 9-1-1
then wait for police help.
Again, for realism actual emergency
personnel in their vehicles
are part of the production.
