In April 2005, we started the Vernonia Bike Safety Program. This program is designed to provide safety information and education as well as reinforcing all laws governing bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller blades, and roller skates. The program also provides free helmets and low-cost safety equipment. The program also helped coordinate the Spring Bike Rodeo.
To receive information, get a free helmet or purchase other safety equipment, please visit the police office during business hours. If you have questions about this program, please email
Captain Kay at kay@vernonia-or.gov.
For Parents:
Talk with your children about bike helmets and overall bicycle safety. Bumps and bruises heal, but a head injury can be forever. |
Kids learn by example. Set a good example yourself by always wearing a helmet whenever you go bicycling. Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of serious head and brain injury by 88% |
Short rides close to home can be the most dangerous. Over 60% of childhood bike-related fatalities occur on small neighborhood roads. The typical bike crash occurs within one mile of home. |
