We are often asked if there is a minimum age at which a child
can be left home alone. Oregon's Child Neglect Laws indicate
that a child should be at least 10 years old.
Good parental judgment is very important. Before leaving your
child home alone, consider his or her maturity level, the
environment, and how long he or she will be left unattended.
If your child is immature, unskilled at being alone or does not
know what to do in an emergency situation, he or she is not old enough to be alone, regardless of age.
Talk to your child about the potential risks and dangers of being home alone. Make sure he or she clearly understands the rules and your expectations. Leave clear instructions on how to contact another adult if needed. Discuss potentially unsafe situations, like how and when to answer the telephone or doorbell. Make sure your child knows not to tell someone he or she is home alone. Be sure to discuss
whether or not it is appropriate for your child to have friends over while you are not there.
Many of these questions should be asked when considering allowing your younger child to baby sit. We are offering a “Babysitter's Guide” for all current and prospective babysitters. Copies of this guide can be picked up at the station office.
We have collected links to sites with further advice about leaving children home alone and babysitters.
